Movie Night – COCO

Friday, October 26, 6-8:15pm

Join the Harvey Milk community in the school cafeteria for a family-friendly movie night! This fall we will show the Pixar movie Coco. As an article in the New Yorker describes: [COCO] presents death as a life-affirming inevitability”.  Ultimately, the main message of this film is that families belong together, in life and in death.

Please sign up here to volunteer at the Movie Night!

THE HARVEY MILK CIVIL RIGHTS ACADEMY family would like to honor our ancestors and loved ones who have passed on by putting up an “Ofrenda” in the hallway across from the main office. Anyone and everyone are welcomed to bring a photo, a poem, a symbol representing the person(s) you are honoring, to place on the altar. The altar will be up Monday, October 15 through Friday November 2, 2018.

13TH – Film Viewing and Discussion

Wednesday, October 17, 5-7pm
Room 202

The Diversity & Inclusion Committee invites everyone to join a viewing and discussion of the documentary “13TH“.

The title of Ava DuVernay’s extraordinary and galvanizing documentary 13TH refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which reads “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.” The progression from that second qualifying clause to the horrors of mass criminalization and the sprawling American prison industry is laid out by DuVernay with bracing lucidity. With a potent mixture of archival footage and testimony from a dazzling array of activists, politicians, historians, and formerly incarcerated women and men, DuVernay creates a work of grand historical synthesis.

There will be dinner cooked by kids in the Soup Squad and child care is available.
